Job Description
The job purpose is to serve as Head of Legal to the Novartis ‘Global Drug Development (GDD)’ in India. Accountable to lead, design and execute the legal strategy and to provide pro-active legal support to India and global GDD organizations. Provide business oriented, practical and timely legal counselling to the operations in India and to the Legal Leadership Teams at Global level.
Roles and Responsibilities
Strong contracting skills viz., drafting, negotiation and review of all commercial contracts, especially the R&D agreements, including those related to the development of pharma assets and analytical services, procurement of clinical trial services, agreements with CROs, HCPs, research collaborations; and advise on IP related matters in close collaboration with IP counsel, at both India and Global level.
Identify, analyze and mitigate key legal and business risks, and help drive smart risk-taking, efficiency and productivity within the Legal and Procurement functions.
Legal support on employment and labor-related matters, internal investigations, litigation, and legal support to HR/P&O functions;
Serve as a valued member of the Global Drug Development Legal Team, India Legal Board, Site Risk Committee, IC (POSH) Committee and collaborate closely with Legal colleagues throughout Novartis and serve as an enterprise connector.
Identify opportunities for optimal legal support for GDD activities, in collaboration with CONEXTS, Country lawyers and other external legal resources; and enhance the provision of Procurement and Legal services;
Create and deliver trainings to business partners tailored to specific and relevant areas of law as may be required, including on current and emerging key risks;
Advise on compliance-related matters, and assist in investigations, in the regulatory & development areas, working closely with the Country Head of ERC and the GDD ERC function.
Business partner to GDD in the day-to-day operations in India and the legal leadership teams at enterprise level and strict observance of confidentiality
Minimum Requirements
What you’ll bring to the role:
Law degree and preferably bar admission in India or other jurisdictions
Professional training and Qualification as a Lawyer
Substantial expertise related to Indian legal, policy, and regulatory environment (Pharma law).
Understanding of both the Legal and Compliance view toward risk and regulatory issues.
Min. [10] years of experience required: ideally gained within a healthcare / pharmaceutical environment, or alternatively, with a top-tier law firm representing healthcare & technology clients
Ability to analyse complex legal issues
Strong verbal & written communication skills; together with a high ability to influence and negotiate
Proven ability to deal positively when working within tight time pressures & demanding clients
Sound experience in handling a high volume of activity involving multiple, often complex projects simultaneously
Demonstrate professional & culturally sensitive work ethic
