HC judge declares resignation in open court

One-liner: Justice Rohit B Deo of Bombay High Court has resigned from office. The judge, who is sitting in the Nagpur bench of the HC, disclosed the same in open court on Friday.

Apologises in open court: While mentioning his resignation, the judge also apologised in open court. He mentioned that he was resigning due to personal reasons.

No hard feelings: He said that he had no hard feelings against anyone and that he is sorry if he has hurt anyone. Lawyers present in court said that he also said that he could not work against his self-respect.

  • The judge, who is sitting in the Nagpur bench of the HC, had been on the bench that discharged Professor GN Saibaba in the Maoist links case last year before the SC suspended the same

Recent judgment: More recently, a bench led by Justice Deo stayed the effect of a govt resolution empowering the Maharashtra govt to cancel punitive proceedings initiated against contractors working on the Samrudhhi Expressway project.

Due to retire in 2025: Justice Deo was elevated to the HC bench in 2017. He was the State's Advocate General before his appointment as a judge. He has also served as the Additional Solicitor General at the Nagpur bench of the HC. He was due to retire from the office of HC judge on Dec 4, 2025.
