Delhi riots: Arguments opposing Khalid's bail plea over

Published on

One-liner: The Delhi Police on Wednesday concluded its arguments before the Delhi HC opposing a bail plea of former JNU student Umar Khalid who was arrested in connection with a UAPA case related to Delhi riots in Feb 2020.

Matter listed for Sept 9: A bench listed the matter for Sept 9 for hearing rebuttal submissions of Khalid's counsel.

  • The HC asked the counsel for the prosecution and Khalid to submit their written submissions in the case

Calculated speech: The prosecution has opposed the bail plea of Khalid saying the speech delivered by him in Amravati in Feb 2020 was a very calculated one which brought various points, including Babri Masjid, triple talaq, Kashmir, CAA and NRC.

Speech read out: On Wednesday, Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad referred to several statements given by the witnesses and also read out a portion of Khalid's Amravati speech.

Nothing objectionable: Khalid's counsel had earlier said that mere membership of a WhatsApp group can't make him criminally liable when nothing objectionable has been attributed to him.

Conspiracy: He had contended that these accused were connected with each other at the relevant time as a part of the conspiracy for rioting.

Bottom line: Khalid was arrested on Sept 13, 2020, and has been in custody since then.
