Imam moves court claiming threat to life in prison

One-liner: Former JNU student Sharjeel Imam, an accused in a case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, on Monday moved a Delhi court claiming a threat to his life.

Assaulted in jail: The application, which is likely to come up for hearing, alleged that the Assistant Superintendent of Jail recently had entered his cell along with eight-ten people in the garb of a search, assaulted him and called him a terrorist and anti-national.

Inflammatory speeches: Imam is accused of making inflammatory speeches against the govt on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC), which led to violence in the area outside the university.

Sedition charges: Imam, also facing sedition charges for his inflammatory speeches, is in judicial custody since Jan 2020.

Charge sheet filed: Delhi Police had filed a charge sheet against Imam in the case, in which it alleged that he gave speeches inciting hatred and disaffection towards the central govt and instigated the people which led to the violence in Dec 2019.
