HC against police personnel serving as orderlies

One-liner: The Madras HC on Tuesday said the lower-level police personnel should be relieved of doing menial jobs at the residences of senior officers.

Illegal: It is illegal to use a person belonging to a uniformed force for domestic works of officers and cases must be registered against such officers, it said.

Don't engage as orderlies: Trained constables on a salary of ₹45,000 should not be engaged as orderlies at the houses of their superiors, justice SM Subramaniam said. 

  • The govt must ensure the removal of orderlies immediately from the residences of retired police officials, too, he said

Writ: He made the observations when a writ petition from U Manickavel challenging an order evicting him from the police quarters came up for further hearing on Tuesday.

Eviction order: The eviction order was passed in Jan 2014 under the Tamil Nadu Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Rules. But it was implemented only now.

Trending nexus: Finding fault with the trending nexus between police higher-ups and politicians, the judge said the same would lead to increased criminal activity.

Misconduct: Police officers should not even meet politicians with bouquets. This is also misconduct, the judge added.

Taken up with CM: Additional Advocate-General P Kumaresan told the judge that his recent remarks against the erring police officials were taken up with CM M K Stalin.

Pat for govt: Since the CM had initiated appropriate steps, the judge appreciated the govt for having done that.
