Response sought on plea against delimitation panel

One-liner: The SC on Friday sought a response from the Centre, J&K administration, and ECI on a plea of two Kashmir residents challenging a govt's decision.

What the plea is: The plea is regarding constitution of delimitation commission for redrawing the assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in the Union Territory.

Notice issued: A bench issued notice to the Centre and Election Commission of India and sought their responses within six weeks.

• At the outset, counsel for two Srinagar residents said contrary to the scheme of the constitution, this delimitation exercise was carried out

Bench query: The bench said the delimitation commission was formed sometime ago and asked the petitioners why they did not challenge it at that time.

• Why you have not challenged the formation of the commission itself and do you challenge the abrogation of Article 370 also, the bench asked

Mind your words: The bench told the counsel, who was making objectionable submissions, to choose his words properly and said Kashmir was always part of India.

Hearing on Aug 30: It posted the matter for further hearing to Aug 30.
