Hate speech: SC lets petitioner to implead EC as party

One-liner: The SC on Friday permitted a petitioner seeking direction to the Centre to examine international laws and take steps to control hate speech in the country.

Petitioner's plea: The apex court also allowed the petitioner to implead the Election Commission as a party in the matter.

Matter posted to May 19: It posted the matter to May 19 and granted liberty to the petitioner to serve a copy of the petition to the standing counsel.

Law panel report: A bench was hearing a plea filed by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay seeking a direction to the Centre to take steps to follow Law Commission Report-267 on hate speech.

The reason: Upadhyay said hate speech frequently happens during election time and that is why he wanted the Election Commission impleaded.
