Lakhimpur: SC bench to hear plea against Mishra's bail
One-liner: The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would set up a bench to hear today a plea challenging the grant of bail by the Allahabad HC to Ashish Mishra, son of Union minister Ajay Mishra.
8 people died: It is related to the Lakhimpur Kheri violence that left eight people, including four farmers, dead.
Attack on witness: A bench took note of the submission of a lawyer, appearing for some farmers, that there was an attack on one of the prime witnesses of the case.
- The people who attacked the witness threatened by saying now that the BJP has won, it will take care of him, the lawyer said.
Co-accused seek bail: He also said the other co-accused are also seeking bail relying on Allahabad HC order granting bail to Ashish Mishra.
- A bench had earlier heard the case pertaining to incidents of violence and had appointed a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana HC to monitor the probe
Bail to Mishra: A single-judge bench of the HC, on Feb 10, had granted bail to Mishra who had spent four months in custody.
Kin of victims seek stay: Three family members of farmers killed in the violence have sought a stay on the Feb 10 bail order of the HC, saying the verdict was unsustainable in the eyes of law.
Flashback: On Oct 3 last year, eight people were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri during violence that erupted when farmers were protesting against UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya's visit to the area.
