Murder case: Interim protection to Mamata's poll agent

Published on

One-liner: The Supreme Court on Thursday granted interim protection from arrest to Trinamool Congress leader S K Supiyan, who was the election agent of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, in connection with a murder case being investigated by the CBI.

Order challenged: A bench was hearing an appeal filed by Supiyan challenging an order of the Calcutta High Court which rejected his anticipatory bail plea.

  • The apex court directed the West Bengal govt to file statements recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC)

On the other side: Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Supiyan, submitted that the supplementary charge sheet has been filed in which again the petitioner has not been named.

Background: The CBI is probing the death of BJP worker Debabrata Maity, who was attacked in Nandigram, on an order of the HC, which directed the agency to investigate post-poll violence cases in the state.
