SC to rescue of man accused of raping woman

One-liner: The Supreme Court has granted interim protection from arrest to a man accused of raping a woman on false pretext of marriage.

Notice to Rajasthan govt: A bench issued notice to the Rajasthan govt and others on the appeal filed by the man against the high court order.

  • The apex court, however, granted liberty to the police to move an application for vacation of this interim order
  • The advocate, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that the allegation of rape against his client was baseless

Bail plea dismissed: The top court was hearing an appeal filed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, working as a technician at Jaipur, against the order passed by Rajasthan high court which dismissed his anticipatory bail plea.

Need to know: According to the appeal, Singh met the woman for the first time about 10 years ago when they came in contact with each other on account of work. In due course, both remained in touch through messages and also used to meet regularly.

  • On Aug 6, 2021, Singh's marriage was fixed by his parents. When the complainant came to know about this, she  started blackmailing, asking him to marry her and warned that she would lodge a rape case against him
  • The FIR has admitted the said fact of romantic affair and has been filed with the sole intention to harass the petitioner as he chose to not marry the complainant
